David Gibson is Director of Energy at College of the Atlantic, where he teaches courses in energy systems, building science, decarbonization, and climate advocacy. A certified energy manager and LEED Accredited Professional in Building Design and Construction, Gibson combines technical expertise with hands-on sustainability practice, helping students engage directly with the challenges and opportunities of the clean energy transition.

Before joining COA, Gibson worked in renewable energy system design at ReVision Energy, served as an Energy Efficiency Specialist with the Nevada Governor’s Office of Energy, taught energy technologies at Truckee Meadows Community College, and held leadership roles with environmental organizations in Maine and Nevada. He earned a BS in civil engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute and also holds a Permaculture Design Certificate.

Gibson serves as Vice Chair of the Sierra Club Maine Chapter, where he has led advocacy efforts focused on clean energy, efficiency, and climate policy. He played a key role in advancing landmark Maine legislation supporting clean energy financing and fossil fuel divestment.

Outside of his academic and advocacy work, Gibson has transitioned two homes—including an 1828 post-and-beam farmhouse—completely off fossil fuels. He and his wife, Willow, are developing a permaculture homestead in Morrill, Maine, featuring orchards, berry plantings, and a diverse nut grove. He enjoys hiking, mountain biking, skiing, snowshoeing, paddling, and other outdoor pursuits.
