Toby Stephenson is a mariner, educator, and naturalist. After earning his BA from College of the Atlantic in 1998, he became a naturalist and later a licensed U.S. Coast Guard captain. He now serves as Director of Marine Operations at the college, where he teaches navigation, safety, and seamanship. He previously led hiking and kayaking trips for the Chewonki Foundation and worked as an endangered species observer for NOAA. In the off-season, he guides expeditions in South America and Antarctica, lecturing on marine mammals and navigation history. At home in Maine, he enjoys gardening, hiking, and time with his family.
