Bill arrived at the 50-acre pleasure garden Chanticleer in 2003, following 26 years at Longwood Gardens in Education, Research, and Production. He leads the talented and creative Chanticleer staff, emphasizing an environmentally sensitive, multi-century approach with a strong commitment to horticultural education. The organization provides internships, scholarships, and exchanges aimed at experiencing and learning the art of horticulture. The staff and he co-authored The Art of Gardening, recipient of the American Horticultural Society Book Award. Bill holds a B.S. and an M.S. in Ornamental Horticulture from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He was awarded the Elizabeth Medal of Honour by the Royal Horticultural Society in 2026; he previously received the Scott Medal and Award, the American Horticultural Society Professional Award, the American Conifer Society Award of Merit; and was inducted into the Garden Communicators International Hall of Fame.
